Most disappointing resolution to How I Met Your Mother imaginable.

seenontabletop:
I’ve been playing Catan for years and it was nice to see it featured on Tabletop. Being the father of a rapidly evolving, small humanoid, I of course want to start impressing upon him my love of board games.
This past week, at GenCon, I got the opportunity to try out Catan…
Wait….what do you mean “if” you get a second season of TableTop? This is up for...
Mitt Romney’s `just trust me’ campaign, explained. →
wilwheaton:
This is now the third area in which Romney has refused to share specifics on the explicit grounds that so doing would be bad politically for him. Romney has repeatedly said he won’t release his tax returns because Democrats will find things in them to attack. And he has vowed to eliminate whole government agencies, but has confirmed that he won’t specify which ones precisely because...

Eureka
So, just a few weeks ago, one of the favorite TV shows of my family ended after 5 seasons. It had a good run, but probably the most disappointing thing is the fact that, after Syfy had announced a shortened sixth season to wrap up a lot of lingering plot points, they back-tracked, leaving the production to try to clear up in the course of a single episode all the stuff they would have done over...

Tragedies can happen, but it should be noted...
Dear everybody-
There is a world of difference between punk rock, and the music made by a guy who shoots up a temple.

Drummers (again)
It’s so funny that, as we start learning our instruments, our easy guide to who’s a better drummer is who can play odd time signatures better; yet, as we grow in our abilities, we realize that THAT is the easy stuff. 9/8 or 11/8 is always gonna sound awesome. The real trick is in making 4/4 sound interesting.
Games...
I’m not sure if I’m more excited for the upcoming re-release of Final Fantasy 7, or the re-release of NiGHTS Into Dreams…
Or the Wii U. Probably the Wii U. Especially if there’s any chance at all (probably not) of each of these winding up there in the near future.

Fuck that guy.
Between The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, and Captain America, the bastard never has to work again.
I love his stuff, but seriously….fuck that guy.

Turns of phrase
I often amuse myself by creating odd little turns-of-phrase. These turns of phrase will often be fairly similar to the original intent; however, sometimes they’re so delightfully off-kilter that they bring a whole new meaning to what is being said.
Some of my favorites that I’ve used in everyday conversation:
“We’ll burn that bridge when we get to it.”

Drummers
Note: if a drummer, when asked, tells you he doesn’t need help moving his equipment, what he really means is that it will take him longer to explain to you what needs to be moved and where it needs to be set up than it will to just do it himself.

Marvel Movies
So, having finally watched the trailer for “The Amazing Spider-Man”, I find myself wondering:
Is there still only one “Marvel Cinematic Universe”, or is, too, now a multiverse? I mean, I was willing to give the Hulk reboot a pass, seeing as how the first film didn’t really have a franchise to tie into, and thus a reboot sort of made sense for the purposes of The...

Great wizard? Yes. Great thinker? …..not so much.
The family’s been doing a Harry Potter movie marathon lately (we’ve basically been just doing movie marathons since Memorial Day’s “Star Wars” marathon- so far we’ve also done Back To The Future, Karate Kid, Avengers, and now Harry Potter), and it frustrates the hell out of me how thick everyone at...

Expecting, pt 2
[warning: this won’t make a lick of sense, likely, if you’ve not read the previous “Expecting” post]
So, I keep having this dream that, despite the ultrasound, despite the words of the doctors, despite everything and everyone telling us we’re having a girl, we’re in the delivery room, and as the kid is coming out, suddenly BAM!
There’s a penis.
And all...

Fanboyism
I have long been (and ever shall be) a Sega fanboy. In case you couldn’t tell from my username. For that matter, in case there’s any confusion as to what my username refers to:

However, in my mind, Sega always was, and always will be, a hardware manufacturer. Sure, they haven’t released a home console since killing the Dreamcast in...

The people who throw lit firecrackers into the street as cars drive past their house: is it a normal reaction to want to return the favor by tossing lit firecrackers into an open living room window as they sleep?

Project # 2
I’ve got several projects in mind that I would love to tackle at some point, but the resources are not currently available to me for one reason or another.
Until such time, though, my plan is to maybe try to create some more space in my brain by being able to unload those top-secret projects here. Yeah, that’ll make them public, and therefore possibly an easy target for poaching, but even if I...

Expecting
So, we’ve finally gotten the ultrasound (you know….the one you wait for all during the pregnancy). And my wife and I are having another girl. We’re using a name we picked out not too long after our first was born (she’s now 8). That’s how long we’ve liked this name.
It’s not keeping people from making their own suggestions, though.
Frankly, I...

Defending Jar Jar
My family and I recently spent the Memorial Day weekend by enjoying a Star Wars marathon. Despite my wife and I growing up watching and loving Star Wars, for some reason our kids have shown little to no interest in these stories.
For this reason, we decided maybe, rather than being the purists we are, we’d give in, and start at the “beginning”: Episode I, in all it’s terrible “glory”.
To be...

Things you are not allowed to call me
Please do not call me “Buddy”. Without getting into a whole “I’m not you buddy, guy” thing, just don’t do it. There’s only one person on the entire planet who is allowed to call me his buddy, and that’s my son. Likewise, he’s the only person that I will call buddy.
Also, don’t call me “son”. If you’re using...

Parenting
So, about an hour ago, my daughter was screaming in her bedroom.
She’s 3, so this isn’t normal. And she’d been screaming all night, which is pretty frustrating for everyone involved. So, I ask her what she wants, and in a moment of defiant opposition, she screams “NOTHING!”
The fuck am I supposed to do with that? I’m exhausted as all hell, frustrated by the...

5 Covers That Should Never Have Been Allowed To...
In the spirit of my previous post, I follow up with a new selection of covers. Covers that are so absolutely terrible that they threaten to ruin the very fabric of a perfectly serviceable song. Covers so atrocious that it’s astounding that apparently nobody along the way realized what a terrible idea they were. [For the record, I’ve limited my choices to studio cuts. Anybody can...

Ok….reblogging someone else who reblogged me is a little awkward (to say the least). And yet, here I am, doing just that. All in defense of a blog post proclaiming a couple of covers better than the originals. Namely:
Why do I prefer Roger Taylor’s “Racing In The Street” over Bruce Springsteen’s original? Because, if I’m being perfectly honest,...

5 Covers Better Than The Originals
Covers are, of course, reinterpretations of songs. Sometimes they’re good, sometimes their not. Sometimes, they call attention to songs otherwise neglected. These are five covers that are better than the originals. Judge for yourself.

Someone once said that the difference between liking...

10 Shows I'm Currently Obsessing Over
As I’ve written in the past, my wife and I are cord-cutters, and proud of it. I honestly can’t imagine that we would have survived cutting the cord even just 2 or 3 years ago (especially considering every time we’d try to dump cable, we’d immediately put up an antenna, and then start complaining about the lack of a DVR), but there’s so much good stuff available now...

Thoughts on Easter
Something that I absolutely love experiencing is when I’m able to revisit a story that I’ve heard or read a thousand times previously, and somehow manage to find something new in it. That happened to me at church yesterday.
I’ve gone to church all my life, meaning that, at the very least, I’ve heard the story of Easter 32 times by this point. (In fact, it’s far...

An open letter to a friend
Look- I don’t want to sound pushy. I know I’ve not been the greatest example of what a Christian should be. I know that the past 6 months or so that you’ve known me, I’ve been a pretty terrible example, frankly. To be perfectly honest, though, I was a terrible person long before we met. But, despite all my flaws, all my screw-ups, the disaster that I continually (though...

Roku
So, my most recent post was reblogged by someone, and they (in their reblog) asked how one watches YouTube channels on Roku. That made me realize that maybe I need to point out a few of the awesome things one can do with a Roku and a couple of channels (and a few things I wish I could do).
First off, despite the lack of an official YouTube channel, there is a channel available (through the...

The new media landscape
Several months ago, my family cut the cord. We needed to make room in our budget, and our Dish Network subscription seemed like as good a place as any. Of course, we knew it would be hard, but it had to be done.
We were paying around $60/month for a crap-ton of channels we weren’t watching, and pretty much the only things we ever were around to watch “live” were reruns of...

Awesome things about the RRHoF
So, we just got back (a couple of days ago) from an awesome trip to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. I absolutely love it, but more so, I love using it as a conduit to teach my kids not just about this music, but the making of this music, and how it came about in the first place.
In the course of exploring the place with my family, a few interesting things came up.
In showing my oldest daughter,...

Musicology 101
So, I’ve been gearing up for our spring break, including a trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (our second trip for most of the fam). Been pretty stoked about it, especially since this time we’re actually going shortly before the induction ceremony. Anyway, in order to sort of hype up this portion of the trip, I decided to dig in and do a little research, to see if I...

While it may be easy to accuse politicians of saying one thing and doing another, or continually flip-flopping on issues, only a government run by the world’s third-largest land mammal can be said to be a hippocracy.

On plot elements
One of the things I love about the art of writing (particularly fiction) is how certain items can creep up as a matter of necessity. I love sitting down, and creating an entire universe, and just sort of coming up with a scenario, and watching how all of these unique personalities you’ve created react to the scenario.
Non-writers probably don’t realize that’s how it works (and...

Co-worker: Is there anywhere I could cook a piece of chicken?
Me (as I’m cleaning the grill): Yeah. The grill.
Co-worker: I know. I meant….
[pause, while I look at her]
Co-worker: What I meant was, could I get a fresh piece of grilled chicken?
Me: Sure.
This is what frustrates me, and ultimately what frustrates other people about...
